Ford recalls 1.39 million F-150s in the US over unintended downshifts

Ford has announced a recall of approximately 1.39 million F-150 pickup trucks in the United States due to a defect that could cause the vehicles' transmissions to unexpectedly shift into second gear. The recall stems from findings during a federal investigation into complaints from vehicle owners.

Affected Models

The recall specifically involves 1,392,935 F-150s manufactured between March 12, 2014, and August 18, 2017. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the issue originates from a potential communication breakdown between the transmission range sensor (TRS) and the powertrain control module (PCM).

"If that occurs, the transmission may shift into second gear without warning", the NHTSA explained in its notice. It further noted, "Degradation of the electrical connections in the transmission lead frame due to thermal cycling and vibration can result in a momentary detection of incorrect TRS signal positions by the PCM. A faulty TRS signal can lead to an unintended downshift."

Potential Risks and Warning Signs

An unexpected downshift to a lower gear could result in a significant reduction in wheel speed. Under certain driving conditions, this may lead to rear tire slip or a loss of vehicle control, increasing the risk of a crash. Drivers might notice warning signs such as an illuminated malfunction indicator light (MIL) or a wrench symbol on their vehicle's instrument cluster.

The recall has been linked to two injuries and one crash that may have occurred as a result of the defect, according to NHTSA.

Investigation and Response

The issue gained attention after NHTSA shared vehicle owner questionnaires with Ford on October 30, 2024. This prompted Ford’s critical concern review group to initiate an internal investigation. By April 2, 2026, Ford had recorded 444 warranty claims, 121 field reports, 105 customer service reports, and 316 owner questionnaires in the US concerning this defect, affecting 891 unique vehicles.

Ford’s Recent Recall History

This recall is the latest in a series of callbacks from Ford in the US. Earlier this month, the company recalled over 422,613 vehicles due to a windscreen wiper defect. Last month, more than 1.7 million vehicles were recalled for rear-view camera issues affecting visibility. Additionally, in February, Ford recalled approximately 4.38 million vehicles due to a software problem that could impair trailer lighting and braking functions.

Ford has consistently led US automakers in recall volumes. In 2025, the company issued 153 recalls covering about 12.9 million vehicles, which marked the highest annual total ever recorded for a single automaker in the country.

The recall of the F-150 underscores the importance of addressing safety concerns promptly to mitigate risks for drivers and passengers. Owners of affected vehicles are encouraged to contact Ford or their local dealership for further information on resolving the issue.
