Ford recalls 1.4 million F-150 trucks over gearshift issue

Ford has issued a recall for nearly 1.4 million of its F-150 pickup trucks in the United States due to a gearshift malfunction that could increase the risk of crashes. The issue stems from a potential transmission problem that may cause vehicles to unexpectedly downshift into second gear, potentially leading to a loss of control.

The recall affects F-150 models equipped with six-speed automatic transmissions manufactured between March 12, 2014, and August 18, 2017. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), "some of the pickup trucks may experience an intermittent selection signal of the transmission range sensor to the powertrain control module, which may lead to a temporary, unintended downshift into second gear." This sudden downshift can result in an abrupt reduction in wheel speed, which may cause the rear tires to slide until the vehicle slows down.

Ford has confirmed awareness of two injuries and one accident that could be linked to the issue. In addition, the company noted 444 warranty claims and 105 customer service reports that may be associated with this malfunction as of earlier this month.

Vehicle owners affected by the recall will receive notification via mail. Those impacted will be instructed to bring their vehicles to a Ford or Lincoln dealership, where technicians will update the powertrain control module calibration at no cost to the owner.

This recall emphasizes the importance of addressing safety concerns promptly to prevent further accidents or injuries. Ford and regulatory authorities are urging affected owners to act as soon as they receive the recall notification to ensure their vehicles are repaired and safe to drive.
