Kia recalls 39,500 Sorento SUVs due to potential fire risks
Kia has announced the recall of more than 39,500 Sorento SUVs from model years 2021 through 2023 due to a defect that could lead to a fire risk. The issue stems from the climate-control blower motor, which has the potential to overheat under specific conditions.
According to the automaker, the defect is linked to a supplier quality issue. Specifically, the connection between the blower-motor resistor and connector may overheat when the climate-control fan is set to speed 3 and the vehicle's ignition is on. If this overheating occurs, it could increase the risk of a fire. Warning signs of the problem include a noticeable burning smell or smoke coming from the vehicle's air vents.
To address the issue, Kia has committed to replacing the wiring harness and blower motor-resistor free of charge for all affected vehicles. Interim notification letters will be sent to owners starting November 24, with a follow-up letter to be issued once the remedy is available. Kia anticipates the fix will be ready by December.
For further information, concerned vehicle owners can contact Kia directly at 800-333-4542 and reference the recall number SC351. Additionally, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) provides resources for checking vehicle recall status. Owners can call NHTSA's vehicle safety hotline at 888-327-4236 or visit its website to check their vehicle identification number (VIN) for recall details.
This recall underscores the importance of addressing safety concerns promptly and ensuring vehicle owners are informed of potential risks. Drivers are encouraged to remain vigilant for any warning signs, such as smoke or unusual odors, and to contact their dealer for assistance if needed.
